Report on China’s "health" deemed unconvincing

A research team under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) released its National Health Report yesterday following a decade-long intensive study, claiming that the China’s National Health Index (NHI) has surpassed a number of developed economies such as the US and UK to rank at the 11th among 100 sample countries.
Sparking heated debate on the Internet, the report was soon exposed to massive public doubts about its credibility.
In response, team leader Yang Duogui told reporters that NHI is not something that measures the health condition of the entire population, but rather a key figure used to comprehensively depict the country’s state of development.
Yang said the report has used words like “supersession”, “immunity” and “nerves” that are usually referred to human health to provide insights into how the country has developed.
To straighten things out, Yang explained that countries in different development stages might adopt different gauges, and the findings can also showcase China’s progress in this regard.
According to the report, the US is suffering from a “wealth disease”, including economic bubbles and dramatic income disparities, while China, on the other hand, is also witnessing ever-increasing overwork, unbalance of workload and pay, and a less active domestic consumption market.
