Adverse reactions to immunisations are uncommon and generally non-serious, new figures from Zhejiang show.
Passive surveillance data for adverse events following immunisation
(AEFI) reported to the National AEFI Surveillance System in Zhejiang
province show that the overall rate was 9.2 per 100,000 doses for
2008-2011. There were two spikes in adverse reactions, one associated
with the introduction of pandemic H1N1 influenza vaccine (pH1N1) in 2009
and the other for a Measles-Mumps vaccine (MM) campaign in 2010. The
majority of adverse reactions reported were non-serious events. There
were15 deaths were recorded but only one was possibly related to
immunisation. The most frequently reported reactions were fever and
injection site reaction.
